Literature Text

After Matthew returned to his duties, Gilbert was left with his little brother who was staring up at him with big blue eyes. That conversation that they just had made the wheels in Gilbert's head turn. He decided to leave it alone for now and focus on Ludwig.

"So Luddy..."

"Yes, Bruder?"

"Are you excited? You finally get to leave here soon. A few more days, to be exact."

Ludwig nodded excitedly.

"I miss sleeping with you, big bruder. I don't like being away from you."

Gilbert nodded and pulled his brother into a hug. He rubbed the boy's back. He could hear the little sniffles come from his little brother and it was heartbreaking. He never liked hearing Ludwig cry. It pained him. He could feel his eyes watering back up, he didn't want Luddy to see him cry, he was the big brother. It was his responsibility to stay strong, no matter how much he wanted to break down himself.

"Shhh...stop crying Luddy, you'll irritate your condition and you'll have to stay longer. You don't want that, do you?"

The little blonde shook his head as his face was buried in his older sibling's shirt, staining it with his tears.

"I promise, once you get out of here, I'll make sure you're always with me."

Ludwig sniffled.

"What about Matthew?"

Gilbert didn't respond for a minute. What about Matthew? He didn't really think about Matthew and Ludwig's relationship before. He was so busy thinking about his and Matthew's relationship that he wasn't able to notice how his brother interacts with him. Since Matthew was the main person Ludwig was around in the hospital, he would make friends with Ludwig. Ludwig is a very nice boy and is very lovable, Matthew was just the same. Matthew and Ludwig also hit it off really well when they first met, and he did take Ludwig to the hospital that night instead of turning them away and letting Ludwig die. He will always be grateful for Matthew coming into his life. Ludwig and Matthew seem to have an almost father-son relationship and Gilbert didn't know if that was a good thing because of the traumatic experience he had with their parents. What if Ludwig grew up to be gay too? He knew that Matthew was open-minded but still, that hurt his parents gave him for being who he was will never be recovered.

Gilbert actually forgotten about his brother's question. He shook his head and then finally answered.

"Matthew too. He'll take care of you when I won't be able to."

That must have brought ease to the boy's mind, as his sobs softened and he could hear the whimpers. Ludwig pulled away from Gilbert and wiped away some of his tears. Gilbert watched with a frown. He opened his mouth to speak when he heard Matthew's soft-spoken voice say what he wanted to.

"Ludwig are you okay?"

Matthew sounded genuinely worried. Gilbert watched as Matthew walked over to his brother and wiped away his tears. He looked back at Gilbert and said, "What happened?"

Gilbert got up and had Matthew follow him out of the room. Matthew closed the door and looked at Gilbert with an expectant look.

"What's wrong with Ludwig?"

"He's feeling a little...lonely..."

"Lonely?"

"Ja, and he just wants to be at your house with us. He misses me, Matthew."

Matthew's violet eyes flicked over to the sniffling boy and then back over to the crimson ones.

"I don't want him feeling lonely...I can stay with him tonight."

Gilbert's eyes widened.

"You will?"

Matthew nodded and gave that beautiful smile of his.

"It will go down as overtime but...I don't mind it...I like Ludwig."

It lifted a huge weight off of Gilbert's shoulders when Matthew said that. His kindness knows no bounds.

"Danke so much Matthew...That means so much to me..."

Matthew blushed.

"It's fine Gilbert, no need to thank me."

"No I have to, you do so much for me. I don't even know how I can repay you..."

"It's not necessary."

They both stood there, no one saying anything, just staring at each other. Matthew moved some hair out of his face. Gilbert felt that feeling rising in his chest again. He coughed and then started walking away.

"Well I suppose I should be heading home now."

"I can drive you."

"Nein, it's okay, it's not that far from here. Danke for the offer though."

"Oh, okay, see you later I guess..."

Gilbert just smiled and walked away. Hiding his massive blush that was spread across his pale face.
~~~~~~~
"Gilbert, I can't wait to meet your parents...", Roderich whispered to him as they were sitting on his bed. They were having dinner, consisting of wurst from the restaurant they ate at. Gilbert was a bit unsure at that statement, he still didn't tell his parents that he was gay. He didn't want to see their reactions because he knew that they weren't going to be good ones.
"Gilbert..."
"Yes?"
"Why are you just staring at me like that?" Purple eyes stare into the ruby ones.
"Well I..."
Roderich pulled away from him and crossed his arms.
"Gilbert! Did you still not tell you're parents that we're dating?"
Gilbert just stared at him.
The angry German scoffed and stood up.
"Did you tell your parents that you're gay?"
Hesitantly Gilbert shook his head. Roderich ran his fingers through his brown hair.
"What the hell?! When are you going to tell them?! They're going to find out sooner or later!"
"You don't understand! I don't have parents like yours, they won't handle the news as well."
"SO THEN MAKE THEM HANDLE IT WELL! DO YOU THINK THAT I WANT TO HIDE MY RELATIONSHIP?! I DON'T WANT TO BE IN A RELATIONSHIP IF YOU DON'T HAVE THE BALLS TO TELL YOUR PARENTS!"
Gilbert looked down sadly.
"I know...I'm sorry..."
"ARE YOU REALLY?!"
"Yes...I am..."
Roderich started crying while he was yelling at Gilbert.
"DAMMIT GILBERT, I HAVE FEELINGS TOO AND I DON'T WANT TO KEEP DOING THIS! GILBERT I LOVE YOU AND I WANT THIS TO WORK, I REALLY DO! I DON'T WANT TO FEEL LIKE YOUR DIRTY LITTLE SECRET! I WANT EVERYONE TO KNOW THAT I HAVE A BOYFRIEND AND HIS NAME IS GILBERT BEILSCHMIDT!"
He removed his glasses and started to full on cry.
"I'm so sorry Roderich...I love you too I just can't tell them, at least not yet..."
Roderich nodded.
"Yeah I know, I'm just...I'm so sick of this. Why can't your parents just accept you for who we are so that we can be happy?"
Gilbert couldn't even answer that question. He was still a little hurt by Roderich's outburst. He didn't want to be the cause of his problems. Gilbert placed his hand on top of his boyfriend's but Roderich pulled away.
"Go home Gilbert...Just...Go home...I can't do this tonight."
Roderich walked out of the room sniffling. Gilbert ran his hand through his hair and then got up and left the house to go cry in his room like he did most nights...
~~~~~~~~~~
Gilbert sat there remembering that night. That was a week before that whole confrontation happened. He made it back a while ago. He remembered all the pain that he put Roderich and himself through. He also thought about Matthew too. Even though his parents were dead; if they were to start dating, he would break Matthew's heart all the same. That's the last thing he wants to do...
